Structural steel fabrication is where new construction begins. Wide flange and tube-shaped columns are cut to length, prepared with base & cap plates, and prepared to receive steel beams. Steel beams are cut to length, cambered if necessary, and prepared with connections to steel columns & other beams. Steel beams are set in place for cross beams or bar joists to bear on. Occasionally, finished floors will have more than one elevation or a common stair space, and doglegged or stacked beams are fabricated support slabs with this need. As beams are set to support steel deck, the perimeter of every floor and roof will require a continuous deck edge, to maintain the floor or roof’s shape. This deck edge can be attached to the structural steel framing in the shop, as well as in the field. These deck edge conditions can sometimes cantilever off the perimeter beams a great deal and will require additional framing.
